Jannet L. Walsh, Murdock, Minnesota-based photographer, author, educator, is a first-time published author of a creative nonfiction quest about her Minnesota and Irish heritage.  Walsh received a 2022-2024 McKnight Foundation Grant for writing about her family’s Irish Canadian roots on Wolfe Island, Ontario, Canada, in the middle of the St. Lawrence River. She is also recipient of a Minnesota Arts Board Grant for 2024.

In this endeavor, Walsh combines Irish family detective skills with creative nonfiction narration.  Readers imagine they are walking with her in rural Minnesota, in Ireland, and in Canada, in her ‘you are there’ writing genre, inherited from her family’s oral tradition.

Walsh has written on technology, travel, religion, and was a newspaper columnist on career, workforce, and business. Her writing appears in IrishCentral.com as a correspondent on topics related to the Irish Diaspora. Her photos and videos have been featured by CNN, CNN iReport, HLN, The New York Times Company and the California Academy of Sciences. Walsh served as assistant professor of strategic communications and multimedia at St. Cloud State University. She holds a Master of Arts from Ohio University in photography, and Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from Augsburg University. “Higgledy Piggledy Stones: Family Stories from Ireland and Minnesota” is her first book.

Jannet L. Walsh, of Murdock, Minnesota, is a visual journalist, photographer, writer, strategic communications professional, and educator.  She is the author of a creative nonfiction quest narrative Higgledy-Piggledy Stones: Family Stories from Ireland and Minnesota, publication October 24, 2023 by Shanti Arts Publishing

Walsh is an award winning photojournalist and photographer with more than 20 years of experience capturing images, both still photographs and video. She is a former employee of The New York Times Company, working at a regional newspaper, Star-Banner, in Ocala, Florida. Nominated for a Chairman’s Award (Chairman of The New York Times Company), was her multimedia project Muslims in Marion” project.”

The California Academy of Sciences, San Francisco, Calif., published a video July 9, 2018, including video footage by Jannet shot for an iPhone video project in 2016. It featured scenes of moose walking in a river and other scenic video from Isle Royale National Park. Produced by the California Academy of Sciences for Chicago Public Schools “A Royale Mystery” introduces the students to fluctuations in moose and wolf populations on the island in the past 30-40 years. The original iPhone video project was also was accepted Oct. 15, 2016, into the official selection of Cinephone International Smartphone 2016 Festival, Barcelona, Spain. Education – Jannet has a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Nonfiction Writing, with Publishing Concentration, Augsburg University, Minneapolis, Minn. Thesis manuscript title Higgledy-Piggledy Stones:  Family Stories from Ireland and Minnesota.  Appointments with Augsburg University’s literary press, Howling Bird Press, 2017- 2018: include Judge, Howling Bird Press Poetry Prize, editor, social media and marketing manager, website designer and mentor for author KateLynn Hibbard, assistant project manager, and website editor and writer.

She has a Master of Arts in photography, photojournalism, from Ohio University, School of Visual Communication. Her thesis project, “A photojournalist documentation of Native Americans in Nebraska, 1990-94,” was presented to school children at Department of Defense School AFCENT International School, in Brunssum, the Netherlands and Geilenkirchen NATO Air Base, Germany.

Jannet’s undergraduate degree, a Bachelor of Science in mass communications with advertising-public relations emphasis, and minor in marketing and general business, is from St. Cloud State University, SCSU. She worked with University Chronicle as a Photo Editor and Staff Photographer as a student, and also as student photographer at University Communications.

Multimedia – Her videos have aired on CNN, CNN iReport, HLN and a guest on HLN live.  She has been interviewed by national and international media on topics ranging from searching for work and to the election of Pope Francis. Jannet is a CNN iReport Awards Spirit Honoree.  She was a contributor to clarkhoward.com on topics of technology.  Minnesota Public Radio (MPR), featured Jannet in a story “Behind the brain gain: Ups and downs of going rural,” 2012.

Strategic Communications – She was the Community Relations/Communication Manager, Workforce Connection, Ocala, Fla., a regional workforce board, now called Career Source. Duties included events, public relations and media relations; social media; graphic design; videography, editing and production; digital photography; press release writing; web updating and media buying. She wrote on career and business topics. She has worked on numerous workforce board projects funded by the U.S. Department of Labor, is a Certified Life and Career Coach. Jannet was on the Workforce Connection staff that received the Great Communicator Award for an Institution from the Ocala, Fla., Chapter of the Florida Public Relations Society, 2010.

Teaching, mentoring – Jannet most recently worked as Assistant Professor of Strategic Communications and Multimedia at St. Cloud State University, 2016-2019, and adjunct professor, 2015-2016. Her teaching appointments included an introduction to multimedia course (web design and video) in the Mass Communications Department, along with public relations, strategic communications, photojournalism(visual journalism). She served as an academic advisor to strategic communications students, advisor to student organizations, chair to department scholarship committee, and more.

Jannet has helped approximately 550 students at SCSU build online portfolio websites with WordPress content management system at SCSU, 2015-2019. This includes students in her multimedia, public relations, strategic communications, photojournalism, independent study courses, and academic mentoring.

Husky Agency – Jannet is the founder of Husky Agency, a pro bono student agency  working with campus and community clients and partners to gain strategic communication experience, including social media, create professional portfolios and develop skills and confidence. Husky Media – Teaching a photojournalism, visual journalism, course, she mentored student photojournalists while documenting SCSU’s Sesquicentennial, 2018, creating Husky Media, a website to house online student team projects including written stories, photo essays, videos, and teach WordPress website content management system practices for teams. Essentials include: story telling with digital photos, video and social media, team and leadership skills, meeting deadlines, along with individual student online portfolios.

Video Tutorials – Jannet has a series of online video tutorials at YouTube to learn Adobe Premiere Pro basic video editing skills. The series of 12 videos were created for students in her Introduction to Multimedia course at St. Cloud State University. The video “Fade Audio with Keyframes, Adobe Premiere Pro CC” has been viewed 56,661 as of January 26, 2021, by viewers around the world.

She is a CNN iReport Awards Spirit Honoree as a Citizen Journalist, 2013. Her first online class was at Udemy.comVideo Promo essentials – shoot, edit and share video online, with more than 650 students from around the world, 2013-2015. In September 2013, Jannet was awarded the Golden Apple Award from Udemy.

While living in Florida, Jannet was a mentor and multimedia instructor at the University of Florida summer multimedia journalism program for junior and senior high school students interested pursing careers in journalism.

Worked and lived in Europe – Jannet owned and operated her own photo agency based in Sittard, the Netherlands, as a freelance photographer for Limburgs Dagblad, Herleen, the Netherlands, a daily Dutch language newspaper; had a portrait contract with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization(NATO) at Geilenkirchen NATO Air Base, Germany and other Dutch language publications. Teacher of Foreign Languages – Jannet turned her living room into a global classroom in 2020. She was a volunteer Teacher of Foreign Languages, TEFL, with My Culture Connect, mycultureconnect.org, a nonprofit serving rural junior and senior high students, native Chinese speakers, online via Skype, Changhua, Taiwan. She tutored students at the elite Changhua Art High School, with top ranked student musicians in Taiwan. Jannet also received a Teaching English as a Foreign Language Certification from International TEFL Academy, Chicago.
