Irish Roots – Home to Knockanarroor

Home to Knockanarroor – Project Overview
This is a video project of my journey back home to my family’s roots in Knockanarroor Townland, located just east of the city of Killarney in County Kerry, in western Ireland. Knockanarroor, pronounced “knock-on-a-roar” is an unmarked dirt road where my grandmother’s family lived at least until 1840s, before the Great Famine in Ireland starting in 1845. There are several spellings of Knockanarroor, so I am using the spelling from the 1911 Irish census. The project was photographed in April 2011. View video and full story at CNN iReport.

Silos and church steeple landscape – One year back in Minnesota today!

Murdock is not on the map.
Those were the words of moving van driver on the day of my big move on Aug. 13, 2010 from Ocala, Florida to Murdock, Minnesota.  How could it be it’s not on the map?  My great-grand parents were pioneers in the area, specifically Dublin Township, before Murdock was incorporated in 1881, located in Swift County.
Could it be that Murdock is located near the fictitious Lake Woebegon or even worse, Brigadoon, a village in Scotland that appears every few hundred years?  How would I make the move to Murdock?
The solution was very  simple.  I made a photocopy of a detailed map and with the help of Global Positioning System, the move was completed.

Here is the map I gave to the moving van driver after he told me he could not find Murdock, Minnesota on the map and it must be a fictitious place.

I invite you to follow my blog in the rural community of Murdock, Minnesota, population 303, according to the 2000 U.S. Census Bureau.
The only skyscrapers I need are grain silos and church steeples.  I am a Minnesota Native Daughter.

You might consider a visit to the local cemetery for clues of family history.

A view of the celtic crosses at the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Murdock, Minnesota.

The grave marker of my father, Martin J. Walsh Jr., lists the names of his children at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Murdock, Minnesota. Graves might give you clues in your genealogy jigsaw puzzle.

There is maybe too much snow for a search in Minnesota at the moment, but when you are ready, there is a link to help you find cemeteries listed by counties prepared by the Minnesota Genealogical Society.

Genealogy – Next up, Patrick McGinty clan

I plan to post a video shortly on my Great-Great-Grandparents Patrick “Paddy” McGinty and Mary (Moran) McGinty.

Patrick McGinty and Mary (Moran) McGinty had a daughter named Mary McGinty, born June 23, 1859 in Scotland, and died Oct.1, 1952, Swift County, Minnesota. Patrick or Paddy was born Jan. 1, 1829, in Mayo, Ireland and died Dec. 26, 1915, Swift County.

My great-grandfather Michael John Walsh Jr., (born Oct. 15, 1858, in Canada, and died March 11, 1929 in Swift Co., Minn.) married Mary McGinty, daughter of Patrick and Mary (Moran) McGinty, Nov. 22, 1881, at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church, DeGraff, Minnesota.

I don’t have a photograph of Patrick and Mary (Moran) McGinty, but I will show you in an upcoming blog post about the treasure they left behind!

Do these names mean anything to you? Do you have photos? Do you think you could be related to me? Tell me at jwalsh@wctrib.com.

Genealogy – Identify photos

Read related genealogy blog posts. . .

By Jannet Walsh
Murdock, Minnesota

My second cousin Kay (Kennedy) Frederickson sent me an old family photo, possibly from 1895 – 1896, as the youngest daughter was born in 1895, appearing to be one or two years old. Kay and I share a set of great-grandparents Stephen Foley and Catherine (Meier) Foley, making us second cousins.

Photo tips
1. Share family photos
2. Try to identify the faces in the photos with the help of family.
3. Tell people you are trying to name the faces, by posting on a blog, Facebook, Twitter or one of the family tree sites, such as ancestry.com
4. Ask for comments from family, as there might be other information they have, that you do not.
5. Have fun! Yes, it’s work, but you are finding information of your past you can share in the future.
Right click to save photos below.
