Silos and church steeple landscape – One year back in Minnesota today!

Click to download high resolution of One Year Back in Minnesota poster!

By Jannet Walsh
Murdock, Minnesota

Murdock is not on the map.
Those were the words of moving van driver on the day of my big move on Aug. 13, 2010 from Ocala, Florida to Murdock, Minnesota.  How could it be it’s not on the map?  My great-grand parents were pioneers in the area, specifically Dublin Township, before Murdock was incorporated in 1881, located in Swift County.
Could it be that Murdock is located near the fictitious Lake Woebegon or even worse, Brigadoon, a village in Scotland that appears every few hundred years?  How would I make the move to Murdock?
The solution was very  simple.  I made a photocopy of a detailed map and with the help of Global Positioning System, the move was completed.

Here is the map I gave to the moving van driver after he told me he could not find Murdock, Minnesota on the map and it must be a fictitious place.

I invite you to follow my blog in the rural community of Murdock, Minnesota, population 303, according to the 2000 U.S. Census Bureau.
The only skyscrapers I need are grain silos and church steeples.  I am a Minnesota Native Daughter.

News

There’s only 303 people in Murdock, but there is still an active farming community going strong after being surveyed and platted in 1878 and incorporated in 1881. Many of the orginal families that settled in the 1870s are still here, just like my family and still call Murdock home.

1. Talked with Garrison Keillor at State Fair via iPhone

I had a chance to talk to Garrison Keillor at the Minnesota State Fair on the radio from my iPhone in Murdock. Listen to the audio link.

I have been a fan of Keillor, the host of “A Prairie Home Companion” for years. (I would love to see a live recording one day!) When I lived in the Netherlands I would listen to my audio tapes my late father Martin J. Walsh Jr. gave me years ago. The audio tapes are complete with fictitious news from Lake Wobegon that is needed by every Minnesotan living abroad or maybe just outside of the state of Minnesota. If you are not familiar with Lake Wobegon, learn more at http://prairiehome.publicradio.org.

After calling the Minnesota Public Radio at the state fair, I was asked my name, where I was calling from and if I had a question. Of course I was ready with a question after just finishing my lunch at home in Murdock.

Here is what I asked: “How should I prepare for my “re-immigration” back to my home state of Minnesota?”

Keillor answered by telling me I should prepare by suffering as the winters will bring great suffering, but really will not have to prepare as I will be suffering anyway in the winter.

I was able squeeze in one more question in reference to bachelor farmers made famous at Lake Wobegon, usually from Norway. I asked if I should be afraid of this sector of the rural population, but Keillor told me not to be as the bachelor farmers will just walk away and I shouldn’t have any trouble.

Now I feel I be able “re-immigrate” back into the culture of rural Minnesota with little difficulty.
